Apple Inc to map Ireland's parks and pedestrian areas

Apple Pedestrian Mapping

The giant technology company Apple is set to map all of Ireland’s park, plaza’s and pedestrian areas in a similar way to Google maps.

Their goal, which was announced back in 2018, is to capture data and imagery in areas that are inaccessible to its fleet of mapping cars.

The company plans to build its own Apple Maps system from the ground up similar to Google and they will have portable mapping technology that can be worn by pedestrian mappers.

The first Apple mappers wearing their high-tech data and image capture gear were sent out yesterday from March 4.

They are equipped with portable Lidar sensors and cameras that can pick up all the imagery surrounding the person as they walk around inaccessible places that cars cannot go.

Obviously, this new data will be very detailed and will work into Apple's “look around” feature which provides a 360 degree real-world view of the location.

For those concerned about privacy, faces and licence plates captured will be blurred out and if any identification imagery is captured and displayed, you can request it’s removal.

The backpacks will display prominently the web address for Apple’s mapping site, where people can report issues directly to the company.

Ireland is one of the first countries outside of the United States to get the updated maps along with the United Kingdom and Canada. The system is also being tested in Spain and Portugal.

Apple has updated its Maps app in the past few years with new features such as traffic data, 3D flyover tours of cities and landmarks, and ground level 3D maps.

Their latest operating system, iOS 14 includes cycling directions and voice guidance in some areas for Maps. You can even have curated city guides for map  users to help them find places to eat, shops or a map guide for meeting friends.
