Norway, tough on speed limits and drink driving
Speed limits out on the roads can only properly be useful to society where they create an atmosphere and environment of widespread compliance and enforcement.
In Norway, for example, there are no shades of grey when it comes to enforcement of the speed limits and especially towards drinking and driving .
In places like Norway, if you are slightly over the limit for either, it’s curtains.
There are heavy on-the-spot fines for speeding and if you are sufficiently over the speed limit you are looking at arrest and possibly jail.
Radar traps are frequent and even a small glass of wine or a weak beer might even take you over the limit.
Generally speaking, traffic is generally calm and light, and most drivers are disciplined and law abiding, although moderate speeding is common on highways.
Norwegian traffic is one of the safest in the world. Rules are strictly enforced and all kinds of aggressive driving (such as risky overtaking) is regarded as an offence, and the police in Norway do not hesitate to issue on-the- -spot fines from 100 to 1000 euros.
Here in Ireland, you are allowed to have 0.5 milligrams of alcohol per millilitre of blood, whereas in Norway you are only allowed to have 0.01 milligrams of alcohol per millilitre of blood.
