Project Edward European Day Without Road Deaths
MyVehicle.ie is proud to support Project EDWARD which is the EU initiative by the European Traffic Police (TISPOL) to make today, September 19th, a day without a single road death in Europe.
Across Europe, 70 people die every day from road accidents. Last year TISPOL had great success in promoting safer driving across Europe. The campaign saw accidents drop by 2%.
For the past two years on the 19th September, Project EDWARD, has helped to reduce the number of fatalities by 43.
Gardaí are aiming for zero road deaths today, as was the case this day last year. They have urged all road users to make a pledge to reduce risk and improve safety on our roads.
The campaign encourages drivers to be careful on the road and be more mindful. This is especially so today with the adverse weather conditions which has made many roads dangerous. The Garda Assistant Commissioner, David Sheahan said:
“Reduce speed, never drink or take drugs and drive, put away phones, belt up for every journey and make yourself visible. These are simple life-saving tips. Be as safe as you can, not just on Project EDWARD day but every day.”
Today is a good day to be mindful of our safety out on the roads as Met Éireann have issued a status Yellow warning across Ireland from early morning until this evening. Winds are expected to reach speeds of 50 to 56km/hr with gusts reaching 90 to 110kn/hr.
As a result of the weather, the Gardaí are urging all road users to support Project Edward and help to reduce the risk and improve safety on our roads. The Assistant Commissioner, Sheahan went on to say:
“We are appealing too drivers to drive to weather conditions. Allow extra time when planning your journey and arrive safe.”
