Top Ten Most Popular Cars in the UK
With the falling price of Sterling as a direct result of Brexit fears, there has been an increase in car imports from the UK into Ireland in the past few months. Many are travelling across the water to avail themselves of a perceived good deal. A report last week in the Irish Independent, based on findings from MyVehicle.ie suggested that while heading to the UK to get a good deal on a used car, it may not always be the cheapest option, considering many different variables, such as VRT, travel costs etc.
If you are thinking of venturing into Britain to find a used car, you may like to know what the top 10 most popular cars are in the UK are.
The latest UK monthly car sales stats come from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders and according to the data, small family hatchbacks are still the most popular cars on British roads with the Ford Fiesta topping the list, followed closely by Vauxhall Corsa and Volkswagen Golf.
For Irish drivers, the Fiesta and Golf are always very popular but SUV’s such as Nissan’s Qashqai are becoming increasingly more common.
Here are the top ten most popular cars in the UK at the moment:
10 – Mercedes-Benz C-Class
The buying public chose the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. In the luxury class, it’s cabin is well equipped with quite an efficient engine range. This car is good for both private and business drivers with the C220 Bluetec version offering the best compromise of power and economy.
9 – Mini.
The ever stylish supermini is great to drive and more importantly cheap to run, and will retain a good re-sale value.
8 – Audi A3
The Audi A3 premium hatchback has a range of excellent engines as well as a plug-in hybrid. It is well equipped with a comfortable cabin and many people in the UK believing it to be the best top-end family hatch around.
7 – Vauxhall Astra
The new Vauxhall Astra family hatch may not be the choice as an Irish Import but it is quite a popular car in the UK. It is lightweight and agile and it’s cheap to buy and run.
6 – Volkswagen Polo
This classy supermini is spacious and feels more like a premium drive. It has good all-round leg and headroom within its class. The Volkswagen Polo performance-oriented models, such as the GTI are also considered a good buy.
5 – Nissan Qashqai
The ever favorite Qashqai and SUVs of the year is an excellent family car with four-wheel drive on some variants, making it very appeal. The Nissan Qashqai offers impressive economy and CO2 emissions in it class.
4 – Ford Focus
What can you say about the Ford Focus. One of the most popular cars in Ireland, they are fun to drive and well kitted-out. This is still a popular family hatchback, even if there are better and more rounded rivals available. You have the choice of the 1.0-litre Ecoboost model for City driving, while motorway drivers will prefer the 1.5-litre diesel.

The Golf is the car of choice for those discerning drivers looking for a large cabin, smooth, quiet engine range and an engaging drives. This car again which is one of the favourite family hatchbacks out there. Thanks to strong residuals, the resale value if this car is great.

This is an excellent small car and more commonly known in Ireland as the Opel Corsa. It has a roomy cabin and can easily accommodate five adults. It’s economical engines have some of the lowest CO2 emissions in its sector. The Corsa may not have reached the number one top spot like its rival, the Ford Fiesta but its competitive pricing makes very popular.

More than 19,500 Ford Fiesta’s were sold in the UK last month making it the most popular supermini’s out there and probably one of the best small cars around. The Ford Fiesta is fun drive with a practical cabin and it’s cheap running costs only add to its popularity.
