Used vehicle imports 2016
Statistics from MyVehicle.ie show used vehicle imports into Ireland have dramatically increased in 2016 compared to 2015 for the first five months of the year. Imports of used cars overall are up 24.7% from this time last year. In 2015 the imports figure hit over 21,000 cars not measuring up to nearly 27,000 for the first half of 2016.
Apart for the first month of January which was down only 3.3% the next four months have been consistently increasing in terms of import numbers. February imports rose 12.2% from 2015, March went from just over 4,500 vehicles to 5,300 giving a jump of 21%. April and May saw a dramatic escalation in statistics for used vehicle imports into Ireland. Figures rose 46% in April from 3,900 to 5,900 vehicles. In similar fashion May saw a rise of close to 58%.
The rise in used car imports may be influenced by the change in the exchange rate between the euro and the pound. At the moment €1 is equal to £0.79. If this continues to increase we are likely to see an escalation in the number of imports into Ireland. The most popular car imports to Ireland are that of a higher price point than the average Irish car. Models include the Ford Focus in the number one spot. The Volkswagen Passat and Golf are popular import models for the first half of the year. Vauxhall, Audi and BMW dominate the table in terms of numbers.
Ireland has become an import destination for vehicles that have hidden problems associated with them. This can lead to an abundance of unsafe cars being driven on Irish roads and inevitably leading to complications and problems in the future. Out of the 29% of cars imported in the first half of 2016, the data reveals that a massive 16% of these cars had been clocked and 15% had finance outstanding.
